OUR APPROACH

HOW WE WERE BORN

Our training was born out of a need to address a gap in Personal Safety.

Waiting to be attacked and hoping you can kick and punch your way out of it effectively invites you to wait to be a victim before responding.

By this stage, a physical retaliation alone might not be enough, especially if it’s inhibited by a spiked drink, other drugs, fear, or the body's own freeze response which is often accompanied by perceptual distortion and/or loss of fine motor skills.

Critical to bridging that gap is understanding that violence has a narrative, often dominated and kept secret by an attacker and that by the time you realise how far you are along it, it might be too late.

WHAT'S THE SOLUTION?

Prevention is better than cure.

Where possible, fighting should be the last resort, not the first option.

Early recognition of when you are being considered as a target, or more than that - convincing a potential aggressor to pass you over in the first place - puts you in control of the narrative long before any punches are thrown.

Many Self Defence courses claim to have the ultimate response.

HeadFirst believes the only guaranteed way to survive an attack unscathed is to avoid it in the first place.

HOW WE TEACH

Whilst we teach physical self defence as a last resort, the principals of the HeadFirst training are focused on 3 pillars of learning to effectively manage a threat at an early stage, namely, to Identify, Neutralise and De-escalate.

By following these steps, the need for a physical response is significantly reduced.

Our course is not designed to intimidate students with complexity or induce a state of paranoia.

It is designed to be empowering, to improve your body's own natural response to a threat and reconnect your intuition with basic Personal Safety skills that once learned will become part of your mindset, integrating with your lifestyle and allowing you to live your life free from fear.

"We teach pro-active personal safety; learning to avoid the iceberg in the first place, not just man the lifeboats."

ABOUT THE FOUNDER

Prior to moving to Australia from the UK in 2019, the founder of HeadFirst, Steve Curtis served 22 years in London's Metropolitan Police Service.

During that time he distinguished himself in a number of front line roles including Emergency Response, Specialist Firearms and most notably Close Protection to several high ranking members of the UK Government, including two Prime Ministers and other visiting Heads of State.

Upon arriving in Australia he set about using his knowledge, training and experience of violent situations to craft a course that teaches people how to use the same skills he learnt to protect others, to protect themselves.
